Product information "Organic Turmeric Powder"
Organic turmeric (Curcuma longa)is also called turmeric or Indian saffron. The plant, which belongs to the ginger family, originates from India and Southeast Asia. There it has been revered as a sacred plant for over 5,000 years. In Europe turmeric was first known as kitchen herb. Turmeric colours food yellow.
The turmeric plant grows up to one meter high. The green reed-like leaves are less used for seasoning. Interesting is the rootstock, which is dried and ground to powder.
The most important ingredient of the turmeric plant is curcumin. It is also used as a food additive under the name E100. Here it serves as a colouring agent and flavour carrier. Curcumin is not readily soluble in water and is therefore only absorbed to a small extent by the body. Heating in oil increases the bioavailability of curcumin.
Curcumin is only one of the 4 different curcuminoids contained in the turmeric plant. Continuee are cyclocurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin and demethoxycurcumin. The mixture of these 4 curcuminoids is also called curcumin in its entirety. Diferuloylmethane is responsible for the yellowing of turmeric.

Consumption recommendation
Turmeric is particularly suitable for seasoning vegetable dishes, meat, seafood and soups. Turmeric can also be prepared as a tea. It is impossible to imagine Indian cuisine without it, but turmeric is also becoming increasingly popular in this country. Thanks to its natural colouring power, turmeric gives prepared dishes a slightly spicy flavour and an appetising colour. Turmeric is also the basis of all curry mixtures and mustard products. The most important ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. It is responsible for the intense orange-yellow colour and is considered to be the most internationally researched natural active ingredient in the world. The turmeric spice should be used sparingly, as in large quantities it can taste hot to slightly bitter.
