What is baking soda used for?

Our baking soda has food quality and is therefore suitable for many applications in the kitchen, but can also be used in the household and in the garden! Baking soda is a practical all-rounder and has been used in the household for generations.

What is baking soda?

Sodium hydrogen carbonate or sodium bicarbonate is used in food as a leavening agent and in effervescent powders. A mixture of baking soda with a solid acid such as citric acid is found there. It is also found in bath tablets and fire extinguishing powders. It is also used in the softening of water. Sodium carbonates include soda (sodium carbonate, disodium carbonate), natron (sodium bicarbonate, sodium hydrogen carbonate) and sodium sesquicarbonate, which is a mixed crystal of soda and natron. While soda is mainly used to regulate the acidity of drinking water and to break down cocoa and milk proteins, baking soda is mainly used in baking powders. Sodium carbonates are broken down through contact with acids. This releases carbon dioxide. This increases the volume of dough, for example - it rises and becomes fluffy.

Manufacture:

Sodium hydrogen carbonate is a white powder that is stable in dry air. When heated above 65°C, it decomposes into sodium carbonate (soda), carbon dioxide and water (2 NaHCO3 Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O). Sodium carbonate dissolves in water with a weak alkaline reaction. Sodium carbonate is produced by the chemical reaction of ammonia and carbon dioxide in a sodium chloride solution.

Shelf life and storage

If stored in dry, cool conditions, the product will keep for at least 2 years after the production date.

Our products are always packaged in pre-packaged containers that are labelled with a batch number and a best-before date (printed or additional label). The manufacturer guarantees that the product will retain its appearance, taste and behaviour during processing until the best-before date. It is not an expiry date, as is the case with fresh produce, for example.

The origin of our products

Raw materials are subject to strict quality controls, which we naturally adhere to. When selecting suppliers in Germany and the countries of origin, we ensure that all European standards are met, that the products are tested in the laboratory and that the analytical data comply with the strict product specifications. Our suppliers have many years of experience and all the certifications required to ensure consistently high quality (e.g. ISO 22000, IFS, BRC, FSSC or similar). We regularly audit our suppliers on site in order to convince ourselves of these high standards and to control all processes in the supply chain.

Only if a perfect quality is determined, the raw materials are processed further in Germany or filled into finished packages.
