VERSATILE FOR BAKING, COOKING & EASY REFILLING
Description

Product information "Baking soda practical refill"

Baking soda – a versatile classic in a practical refill bag

Some ingredients have one specific job in the cupboard. Baking soda definitely isn't one of them. Whether you're baking, cooking, cleaning or experimenting with your own household preparations, this fine white powder is a remarkably versatile basic ingredient that you can use in many different ways.

Our Golden Peanut® Baking Soda consists of 100% sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO₃), also known as sodium hydrogen carbonate. It is supplied in food-grade quality and is approved as the food additive E 500(ii).

Our practical refill bags make it easy to refill a container you already have or keep a space-saving supply of baking soda on hand. Especially if you use baking soda regularly, the refill bag is a convenient alternative to buying another bucket.

When baking soda gets to work in your baking

Muffins, cakes, cookies, pancakes and many other baked goods can benefit from baking soda. When sodium bicarbonate comes into contact with an acidic ingredient, carbon dioxide is released. The resulting tiny gas bubbles help loosen the dough or batter and can increase its volume.

This is also why baking soda and citric acid make such a reactive combination: when they come together in the presence of moisture, carbon dioxide is released.

Much more than a baking ingredient

Baking soda isn't just for baking. It can also be used in cooking and for numerous traditional applications around the home, including cleaning and laundry. It is also a popular basic ingredient for homemade household preparations.

If you prefer keeping a few versatile basics on hand rather than buying a separate specialist product for every task, baking soda is one of those ingredients you'll find yourself reaching for again and again.

Baking soda, sodium bicarbonate or sodium carbonate?

The terminology can sometimes be confusing, but chemically these are different substances. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO₃). Sodium carbonate, on the other hand, has the formula Na₂CO₃ and is considerably more alkaline. The two should therefore not simply be substituted for one another.

Another potential source of confusion is baking powder: baking soda means pure sodium bicarbonate. Baking powder is a mixture that generally contains a leavening agent together with an acidic component and other ingredients.

Why is baking soda so versatile?

Its versatility comes from its chemical properties. Sodium bicarbonate is mildly alkaline and can react with acids, releasing carbon dioxide under the right conditions. When heated, sodium bicarbonate also decomposes to form sodium carbonate, carbon dioxide and water.

These relatively simple properties are behind many of the different ways baking soda can be used in the kitchen and around the home.

A basic ingredient for people who like to make things themselves

If you enjoy baking from scratch, experimenting with your own recipes or making simple household preparations yourself, baking soda gives you plenty of possibilities. Instead of being tied to one specific application, you decide what you want to use it for.

The refill bags are particularly practical if you already have a suitable storage container or use baking soda regularly. Simply refill your existing container instead of adding another bucket every time you order.

What exactly is sodium bicarbonate?

Sodium bicarbonate is a well-established raw material used in food production and numerous other applications. Industrially, it can be produced through processes such as the Solvay process, in which substances including sodium chloride and carbon dioxide are used.

For our Golden Peanut® Baking Soda, what matters in everyday use is simple: you receive food-grade sodium bicarbonate, versatile for baking, cooking and numerous household applications – in a practical bag for refilling and stocking up.

Citric acid monohydrate
Citric acid is one of the most widespread acids in the plant kingdom and occurs as a metabolic product in all organisms. Lemon juice, for example, contains 5-7% citric acid. It is also found in apples, pears, sour cherries, raspberries, blackberries, currants, conifers, mushrooms, tobacco leaves, wine and even milk. Citric acid is produced industrially by fermenting sugary raw materials such as molasses and maize. Aspergillus niger strains are used for fermentation. Citric acid not only has a lime-solvent effect due to its acid effect, but also due to the formation of a calcium complex. It is often used in detergents to avoid the unpleasant smell of vinegar cleaners. However, the complexes are not heat-resistant and decompose when heated to calcium citrate which is relatively difficult to dissolve. Citric acid can be used, for example, to decalcify kettles, immersion heaters, taps, shower heads, dishwashers or washing machines. As an intermediate product of the energy metabolism (citric acid cycle), citric acid is a component of every living cell. The human metabolism converts one kilogram of it daily. In addition to its function as the most commonly used acidifier, citric acid is used in the food industry for a number weiterof technological applications. Because of its ability to form complexes with heavy metals, it receives fats, colours, flavours and vitamin content in many foods as an antioxidant. When sterilizing cream and milk and melting cheese, it prevents the protein from coagulating. Citric acid supports the reddening of meat and also improves the baking properties of doughs and flours. Citric acid is also used as a technical adjuvant in the production of edible fats and the treatment of fresh fish. Manufacture: Citric acid is produced biotechnologically with the aid of microorganisms, in particular the mould fungus Aspergillus niger. Glucose or molasses serve as the nutrient medium.
